In July 2025, a collaboration between Cultural & Creative Industries Skillnet and Gréasán na Meán Skillnet delivered a unique training programme for members of Ireland’s creative arts and media industries.
The two‑day Silicone Skin Painting Workshop - led by visual storyteller and effects artist Paul McDonnell at Stiúideo Fia in Lettermore, Co Galway - brought together emerging and established creatives for a rare opportunity to explore professional silicone painting techniques for hyper-realistic human skin.
Fran Keaveney, Skills and Talent Development Manager, Cultural & Creative Industries Skillnet, said: “We were delighted to partner with Gréasán ná Meán Skillnet on the Silicone Skin Painting course, which allowed us to give Irish talent access to the same high‑level skills you would find in major international studios. This type of practical course is in high demand in the screen, animation and broader creative industries. It provides CPD training for experienced workers and a bridging course for graduates entering the sector.”
Maria Griffin, Network Manager, Gréasan Na Meán Skillnet, said: “This programme is a perfect example of how practical, hands‑on training can empower Ireland’s creative professionals. By working in partnership with Cultural & Creative Industries Skillnet, we were able to bring world‑class skills development directly to practitioners, supporting the exceptional talent that exist in our creative arts sector.”
Participants immersed themselves in advanced techniques such as airbrushing, layered colour application, and the subtle texturing that gives silicone skin its lifelike quality. Over the course of the weekend, each attendee completed a professional‑standard bust, which was photographed for their portfolio, allowing them to leave not only with new skills but also with tangible proof of their craft.
Participants learned not only the artistic aspects of silicone skin painting but also the safe handling of specialist materials, preparing them for professional studio environments. The workshop’s small group format also allowed participants to exchange ideas, build connections, and learn from each other.
One of the participants, Artist and Designer Saoirse Carey, said: "The silicone skin course was specific, hands-on, and incredibly well-taught by Paul, who created a warm, supportive environment that made learning both enjoyable and effective. It felt personal, professional, and full of heart. I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone looking to upskill in prosthetics and painting techniques, it's a rare gem in a stunning location."
The success of the partnership between Cultural & Creative Industries Skillnet and Gréasán na Meán Skillnet reaffirmed the value of collaboration in strengthening Ireland’s skills ecosystem. Through this joint effort, participants gain both technical expertise and the inspiration and confidence to apply it in their own artistic practice.
