2026 marks 20 years of supporting the print and packaging sector for the Design, Print and Packaging Skillnet. This milestone provides an opportunity to reflect not only on the Network’s history but also on the vital role it continues to play in strengthening workforce capability, supporting innovation and helping businesses remain competitive in a rapidly evolving industry.
From the outset, the Skillnet Business Network’s purpose has been clear: to equip workers and enterprises with the practical skills, technical knowledge and professional confidence needed to adapt to new technologies and market demands. Supported by the Irish Printing Federation, the network has spent two decades building a thriving learning community where upskilling, collaboration and continuous improvement are embedded in how the sector operates.
Throughout 2026, Design, Print and Packaging Skillnet will celebrate this anniversary with a series of activities and competitions, recognising the thousands of learners, employers and partners who have contributed to its success.
“Over the years, printing and packaging technologies have transformed dramatically, from digital workflows and automation to advances in sustainability, materials and design tools. While the tools and techniques have evolved, the industry’s need for skilled, adaptable and forward-thinking people have remained constant,” said Joe O’Callaghan, Network Manager, Design, Print and Packaging Skillnet.
This ongoing need is at the heart of Design, Print and Packaging Skillnet’s work. The Network collaborates closely with businesses to design training that reflects real industry challenges and opportunities. Programmes respond to priorities such as digital transformation, leadership development, operational efficiency and environmental sustainability, ensuring that learning remains relevant and impactful.
“Partnerships with education providers including TU Dublin, along with professional bodies such as the Irish Packaging Society and the Interiors Association, ensure programme content aligns with current industry requirements and emerging trends. This close collaboration is one of the reasons the network has remained agile and future focused for two decades,” outlined Joe.
As part of its anniversary year, Design, Print and Packaging Skillnet is highlighting key achievements, beginning with the Diploma in Packaging Technology Graduation held on 12 February 2026. Delivered in partnership with the Irish Packaging Society and accredited by TU Dublin, this qualification, which is highly valued by employers, develops expertise in materials, sustainability, regulation, design, innovation and manufacturing processes. The 2025 graduating class demonstrated exceptional commitment, reflecting the collective effort of lecturers, industry mentors, employers and programme partners.
“Since its establishment, Design, Print and Packaging Skillnet and its steering group have championed a culture where continuous professional development is valued. From introductory training to advanced technical programmes and Level 7 and Level 9 qualifications, the network provides accessible pathways for growth. While technologies, markets and customer expectations continue to evolve, the sector’s passion for learning remains unchanged. We can look forward to the next 20 years,” Joe added.
