What Is AIE?
The European Communities (Access to Information on the Environment) Regulations 2007–2018 give you the legal right to access environmental information held by, or for, public authorities such as Skillnet Ireland. These rights support transparency and public participation in environmental matters.
Environmental information includes (but is not limited to) data on:
- Air, water, soil, land, biodiversity
- Emissions, noise, radiation, waste
- Environmental policies, legislation, and activities affecting the environment.

We check our emails and post every working day. We aim to respond within one month. If your request is complex or involves a large volume of information, we may extend this by a further month and will notify you accordingly.
Make an AIE Request
To make a valid request under the AIE Regulations:
- Submit your request in writing (email or letter).
- Clearly state that your request is made under the AIE Regulations 2007–2018.
- Be as specific as possible about the environmental information you are seeking.
- Indicate your preferred format (e.g. electronic or paper).
- Include your name and contact details so we can respond.
If we do not hold the information, we will either:
- Transfer your request to the appropriate public authority, or
- Inform you where we believe the information may be found.
Fees
There is no application fee to make a request. However, we may charge reasonable fees for:
- Searching and retrieving information
- Photocopying, printing, or formatting large volumes of data
Appeals
If you are unhappy with our decision or how your request was handled, you have the right to request an Internal Review. If you are still dissatisfied, you can appeal to the Commissioner for Environmental Information (OCEI).
Internal review
- It must be submitted within one month of our decision, using the contact details above.
- It will be reviewed by a more senior staff member.
- We will respond to your request for review within one month.
Appeal to the Commissioner for Environmental Information (OCEI)
- Standard appeal fee: €50
- Reduced fee: €15 (for medical card holders or their dependents)
